HistLab has worked for a long time to make the transcribed data available for statistical purposes. That all the information in the original census has been replaced by numbers (codes), so that it is possible to run statistical analysis on the data.
All the information in the original censuses has been replaced by numbers (codes), so that it is possible to make statistical analyses of the data material. These coded versions of the complete transcribed 1801, 1865, 1900, and 1910 censuses can be downloaded from the North Atlantic Population Project (NAPP).
The 1875 census has not yet been transcribed for the whole country. It is however possible to download a 2% selection of all the municipalities, and a 100% selection from some municipalities, as for instance all the municipalities in the North of Norway (Nordland, Troms and Finnmark).
The download is free of charge, but you will be asked to apply for access and login with a password.
The data are fully documented and the Norwegian censuses are compatible with late 1 9th century complete coded censuses for Canada, Great Britain, Iceland, Sweden and the US. This makes it possible to compare Norway conditions with corresponding conditions in other countries.
It is also possible to order individual municipalities from the 1865, 1875, 1900 and 1910 censuses in coded version direct from HistLab. Documentation of the contents of the coded files is here. Coded files can be delivered in CVS-format. The data is free of charge for use in research. A contract must be filled out and the order should be send to: rhd.web@uit.no
